Don’t Rodney King Me

Video • Workshop

I designed Don’t Rodney King Me for a criminal legal reform client as one response to the uprisings in 2020. The video and workshop gave folx the opportunity to explore incarceration's impact on Black Histories and Black Futures.

The video came out beautifully and the workshop spread throughout the city, creating space for people to talk about the role mass incarceration has played in their lives—often sharing this for the first time.

Shot and edited by Kevin Berg at Mark Serrano’s studio. Co-written by Na’im Al-Amin and me, with support from Nico Wiggins. Directed and produced by me.

Since we filmed this, my friend (and narrator in the story) has been charged with homicide. He turned himself into authorities on October 10, 2023. With that reality in mind, I still stand by this work.
