How To Find Strength When Business Is Bad

Building a business is tough as shit.

There seems to be so much to do and so little time to do it all. In addition to all that your business requires of you, you might have other responsibilities. Your partner needs you, your family needs you, and your dog needs you. And maybe all of that is just the tip of the iceberg for you.

Trust me, I feel you.

I’ve gone through ups and downs in my business life over the past couple of years. We’re bound to face ups and downs that are completely out of our control. But here’s the truth: most of these ups and downs are self-inflicted.


Self-inflicted ups and downs.

So many of our ups and downs are self-inflicted. We inflate situations, get too emotional about those situations, then continue to demonize things to the point of utter failure.

It’s easier to beat ourselves up than it is to lift ourselves up.


When business is bad, here’s something that might help.

This is what I do, so I’m giving you insight on what works for me.

When things seem bad, become intensely objective.

Things might seem bad and hopeless and failing, it’s important to remember that things might only seem bad. In objective reality, there may be hope and opportunity hidden within the objective facts.

Write down details on different aspects of your venture. How’s the cash flow? How many conversations are you having with customers? How would people rate the quality of your offer?

Objective answers to these types of questions clears our heads.

You’re not going to feel your way out of a rut; you’re going to think your way out of it.


Logic comes from your head, while strength comes from your heart.

Once you’ve gotten truly objective on where you’re at with your business, now it’s time for the heart to kick into gear.

Use the belief that’s in your heart to fuel what’s in your head. Put everything you’ve got behind what you’re doing. That’s the only way you’ll know if it’ll work or not.

If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ll know where I stand on “passion” and emotion in business: I’m not a big fan of those things. But I’m not too stubborn to understand that passion and emotion are indeed big parts of others’ business lives.

If that’s you, then let that passion fuel you so much that you can’t think of anything else.

You can do this, but only if you do something.
